Athletic Club and FC Barcelona faced off at San Mamés in a demanding league duel. The red-and-white team, led by Ernesto Valverde, sought to get strong in front of their fans and take advantage of the intensity and pace they usually impose at home. Meanwhile, Hansi Flick's Barcelona came with the intention of dominating the match through possession and the offensive talent of players like Lamine Yamal. With the great atmosphere of San Mamés as the setting, everything was ready for a high-demand match.

FIRST HALF

Athletic started with a lot of energy, pushed by their fans, and tried to impose a high pace from the start. Ernesto Valverde’s men pressed high and looked for quick transitions to unsettle Barcelona, generating the first approaches of the match. But the game quickly turned against the hosts when Unai Gómez suffered a physical issue in the opening minutes and had to leave the field early, forcing the red-and-white coach to make an unexpected substitution and readjust the team.

As the minutes passed, the team coached by Flick began to take control of the ball. Barcelona moved the ball patiently, trying to find spaces in Athletic’s well-organized defense. Players like Lamine Yamal tried to break through on the wing, while Ferran Torres looked to appear between the lines.

Even so, clear chances were scarce. Barça tried some long shots and set-piece actions, but the red-and-white defense remained firm. Athletic, on their part, tried to take advantage of counterattacks and direct play to get close to the opponent’s area, although they did not manage to create truly dangerous opportunities either.

The first half left the impression of a very balanced match, Athletic had started with more intensity, while Barcelona finished dominating possession, although neither side had managed to convert that dominance into goals.

SECOND HALF

Before starting the second half, the culés decided to bring on the player who controls the entire 'backbone' of the team, Pedri. Meanwhile, the Basques also made a change and brought on Sancet to cause more damage through the center.

Flick’s team came out better onto the pitch and began by warning with a great shot from Rashford outside the box, but Unai Simón was confident and caught the ball in two attempts. Later, the home side demanded the sending off of central defender Cubarsí, but the referee only showed yellow, since although Iñaki would have been one-on-one with the goalkeeper, Joan García had come off his line and was reaching to intercept the ball.

After the controversy, Athletic had the chance to go ahead on the scoreboard when Sancet shot inside the small area, but the Barça goalkeeper continues to prove that he is one of the best keepers this season by making a crucial save. But when you waste so many chances against these teams, you pay dearly. In the 67th minute, Flick’s side took the lead when Lamine Yamal made a feint against the Basque defender and the youngster placed the ball in the top corner, thereby making it 0-1.

From the goal on, possession shifted to Athletic Club. Valverde’s men changed their strategy, intensified their wing attacks, and pushed their lines up. While Barcelona slowed the match's pace somewhat, they maintained ball possession and strengthened their defense. In the end, Flick’s team suffered during the final minutes of the game, but managed to take the victory and, with this, moved four points behind Real Madrid.
