Victory for Vigo! Chronicle of Girona 1-2 Celta de Vigo

FIRST HALF

Celta de Vigo had the first chance of the match. Óscar Mingueza delivered a cross into the area that swerved dangerously and nearly caught the Argentine goalkeeper by surprise, but the ball ended up hitting the crossbar. Girona's reaction was not long in coming. After a great long ball from Dutch center-back Daley Blind, the ball fell to Tsygankov, who headed it too weakly, allowing the Romanian goalkeeper to securely catch it.

At minute 30, the Vigo side warned again. After a good shot from Ferran Jutglà, the visitors came close to the goal that would have opened the score, but the Argentine keeper reacted quickly and got his foot out to prevent the opener. However, four minutes later the 1-0 arrived. Girona went ahead following a corner from the left. Belgian midfielder Axel Witsel won the jump, extended the ball, and left Vanat alone, who only had to push it into the net.

But just before halftime, the Giráldez side had a very clear chance to equalize. Fer López made a great run down the right, found himself in a two-on-one, adjusted the ball to his left foot, and his shot, after going between Blind’s legs, unfortunately smashed against the post.

SECOND HALF

The second half started with very high intensity from Girona. Arnau Martínez tried from the edge of the area and the full-back unleashed a spectacular right-footed shot that hit the crossbar, in a very similar action to the one Óscar Mingueza had in the first half.

However, a few minutes later, Celta de Vigo found the equalizer. A great pass from Mingueza put Ferran Jutglà in advantage, and the former Club Brugge player finished with his left foot into the top corner to level the score.

Míchel’s men did not give up and, on the next play, a powerful shot from Hugo Rincón forced Radu to fly and divert the ball to corner with a great save. Shortly after, Daley Blind also tried his luck from outside the area, but his shot, too central, was caught in two attempts by the goalkeeper.

The match took an unexpected turn with Celta’s 1-2. The move started on the right wing, with Jutglà as the protagonist, who put in the cut-back pass into the area and the ball ended up in the net for an own goal after touching Vitor Reis. From that moment on, Girona threw everything forward and, in the 79th minute, Ounahi starred a brilliant individual action, but his very close-range shot again met Radu’s alert response.

In the end, Giráldez’s team came from behind and took all three points.
