Real Madrid has announced a drastic change in its coaching staff: after only seven months leading the team and a key defeat in the final of the Spanish Super Cup against Barcelona, Xabi Alonso has ceased to be the head coach of the first team. In his place, Álvaro Arbeloa, up to now coach of Real Madrid Castilla, has been appointed the new technical director of the first team.

A man from home: from La Fábrica to the Bernabéu

Álvaro Arbeloa is an emblematic figure within the club: he was part of the youth categories, had a career as a professional player, and experienced Real Madrid's recent successes as a footballer between 2009 and 2016, winning leagues, Champions League, and national and international titles with Spain.

After retiring, he began his coaching career in the club's training structure in 2020, leading different youth teams until taking charge of the Youth A team, with which he achieved one of the most successful periods in the recent academy history, including a national treble in the 2022-23 season.

In June 2025, he was appointed coach of Real Madrid Castilla, with positive results and a clear playing identity, and today he makes the definitive leap to the first team in one of the most demanding moments of the season.

Arbeloa's style of play: continuity and tactical courage

Although Arbeloa did not have experience in top-level coaching, his work in the youth categories and at Castilla has left clear marks of a defined and proactive playing style:

1. High pressing and offensive protagonism

Arbeloa's teams have been characterized by seeking high pressure on the opponent, trying to regain the ball in advanced areas and making the opponent uncomfortable in possession. This philosophy aims for an offensive, vertical, and brave football, where the initiative is always with the team in the white jersey.

2. Purposeful possession

It's not just about having the ball, but about controlling the rhythms of the game and causing direct damage. Offensive transition is a key point: recovering quickly near the opponent's area and attacking dynamically.

3. Line dynamics and mobility

Arbeloa tends to implement schemes where midfielders and attackers move freely, seeking to break lines with forward passes or quick combinations. Although he usually employs a classic 4-3-3, he has also used dynamic variations according to the needs of the match.

4. Use of technology for analysis

One of the hallmarks of Arbeloa's coaching staff has been the application of advanced technological tools (analysis with drones and aerial view in training) to study positions and movements with greater precision — a philosophy that he has defended as useful for improving collective performance. (This approach aligns with what was observed in his time at Castilla and internal reports — not always specifically covered in the media, but reconstructed from the style of his youth and reserve teams that he clearly dominated).

How does Arbeloa fit into the current Real Madrid?

Arbeloa's arrival is not only an act of confidence in his work with the youth academy but also an internal response from the club to reorganize the project after Xabi Alonso's departure. His style, based on intensity, purposeful possession, and offensive bravery, could offer continuity of concepts without abandoning Madrid's offensive culture, but with a more vertical and direct approach when necessary.

Furthermore, his intimate knowledge of young talent and La Fábrica's philosophy could result in a greater integration of young prospects into the first team, a value that fits with the club's historical tradition.
